EPA Section 609 MVAC Technician Certification PreparationApproved ProgramsMVAC Requirements
608 vs 609

The two tests are different and cover different equipment.

Compare stationary refrigeration certification with motor vehicle air-conditioning certification and the special MVAC-like equipment route.

Section 608Stationary refrigeration and air conditioning
  • Type I, II, III, or Universal
  • Building systems and appliances
  • Test-only certification structure
Section 609Motor vehicle air conditioners
  • EPA-approved training plus test
  • Road-vehicle MVAC service
  • SAE-based recovery equipment and regulatory practices

Universal 608 does not replace 609

A technician certified Universal under Section 608 still needs Section 609 for paid motor-vehicle A/C service.

MVAC-like equipment is the exception

For qualifying non-road systems, EPA permits Section 609 or Section 608 Type II.
