Certification route

Match the work to the correct EPA credential.

Determine whether paid MVAC, stationary HVAC, electrical-only, salvage, or MVAC-like service requires Section 609 or Section 608.

Road vehicles

Section 609

Required when repairing or servicing a motor vehicle A/C system for payment or bartering, regardless of refrigerant.

Stationary systems

Section 608

Applies to building A/C, refrigeration, heat pumps, appliances, and other stationary equipment where refrigerant circuits are serviced.

Non-road MVAC-like equipment

609 or 608 Type II

EPA allows either certification route for qualifying farm, heavy-duty, construction, mining, and similar MVAC-like equipment.

Shop owner

Separate facility duties

Technician certification does not replace approved-equipment certification and shop recordkeeping.

What counts as consideration?

Payment includes non-cash exchange such as bartering. The rule does not depend on whether the customer paid with money.

Does every A/C-related task open the refrigerant circuit?

Not necessarily. Purely electrical, control, or cabin-air work may not involve refrigerant service. Define the task carefully and use EPA and employer guidance for the actual work.
